Note the "V" shape, made where the bass strings cross the treble strings.

The piano at the top of the page is an overstrung piano. It is a more modern design than the straitstrung instrument below. An overstrung piano is in general more desirable. The strings in the overstrung piano are at a diagonal, they are much longer, this produces a better tone.

Note there is no "V" shape the strings are parallel fr om bass to treble

This is a straitstrung piano. The strings run from the top of the instrument to the bottom parallel to each other. Providing the piano has an iron frame even a straitstrung instrument, in good condition may be adequate to begin on.
